In 2012 students and journal editors from the ENGL390 Writing for Production and Publication class devised the journal’s name, The Quarry, and launched its first issue. The name symbolises the journey every writer embarks on when they decide to write. It acknowledges the imaginative depths that writers delve into to find their unique characters and new worlds, and speaks to the dedication a writer needs to bring these riches to the surface.
The Quarry publishes creative writing by postgraduate and undergraduates students and alumni from the Faculty of Arts in the genres of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Each issue is produced and edited by a group of student volunteers and interns, supervised and mentored by lecturers from the Creative Writing staff.
The Quarry aims to showcase the creative work of the department’s students and graduates. It is published with the ongoing support of Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language, and Literature (MCCALL), previously known as the Department of English. Macquarie University’s Department of English offered undergraduate, postgraduate coursework and PhD studies in Creative Writing for over two decades. MCCALL’s Discipline of Literature and Creative Writing will continue this tradition.
