‘Life is a Quarry, out of which we are to mold and chisel and complete a character’ – Samuel Butler
The Quarry is a journal of creative writing devoted to the work of Macquarie University’s writing major capstone unit.
The Quarry is a yearly publication that showcases a range of creative works, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and screenwriting. There are no limitations on genre, and every work incorporates a student-nominated theme. Each issue is edited by a group of student volunteers that form the Editorial Collective, which is overseen by the unit’s lecturer.
The student body in 2009 devised the journal’s name, The Quarry. It symbolises the journey every writer embarks on when they decide to write. It acknowledges the imaginative depths that writers delve into to find their unique characters and new worlds, while also speaks to the dedication a writer needs to bring these riches back to the surface.
Macquarie University’s Department of English has offered studies in Creative Writing at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels for over a decade. In 2014 Dr Jane Messer, Senior Lecturer, Program Leader in Creative Writing and founder of The Quarry journal, received the Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Students Learning. This award was earned for her creation of a curriculum that encourages students to be motivated, resourceful, creative, and supports student engagement with graduate capabilities.
